Solar Gate

Solar Gate is a steel-work sundial sculpture manufactured by Pearlgreen Engineering. It uses the alignment of the sun to illuminate significant times and dates relevant to the City of Hull. These are projected through its precisley cut holes onto the surface around it, where viewers can identify the historic events.

Designed by the talented artist and designer Tonkin Liu, the sculpture stands at 10 metres high, 4m wide and 1m deep, made from courageously thin 4mm plates. The two curving and corrugated surfaces join, unsupported by any additional support inside or out, to form the magnificent piece.

At night the Solar Gate illuminates, with a controlled in-ground lighting system installed inside and outside the sculpture.
